Author Bio:

Dr. Michael Thompson is a retired professor and pharmacist raised in Detroit, Michigan, during the Civil Rights era. He is an Executive Contributor for Brainz Magazine for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and CEO of Interprofessional Health Educators, LLC, where he provides health consultant services, and is a social media creator on racial and social justice. Born in North Carolina and raised in Detroit, Michigan and educated in the Detroit Public School System, he received both  baccalaureate and doctorate degrees from the University of Michigan. Being raised during the 1960s, he witnessed many years of social and racial injustice as a child and teenager and has a keen interest in providing content to help younger generations understand the importance of remembering the past in order to understand the present, so that they can understand how to craft a better future.

The book, Stay Woke: Our Fight for Truth and Justice was written as a counter to the misbranding of the word “woke” by politicians and others. Historically a term born out of the Black community decades prior, it means to remain alert, be vigilant as it pertains to racial and social injustice. In the book, six different areas are identified in order to show how past injustices continue to impact Black life today. The areas identified are voting rights, education, housing, incarceration, healthcare and generational wealth. The role of the media, misinformation and disinformation help to explain much of the confusion and rhetoric that must be overcome so that we can accept the past, its impact on the present, and the need to continue the fight for equality.
